Early Childhood - Director Certificate

Want to build a young child’s mind? Consider the field of Early Childhood Education.

The Early Childhood Education Program at Arapahoe Community College is designed to prepare professionals to work with young children, birth through age 8, in a variety of settings. The Early Childhood Teacher Certificates – Level 1 and Level 2, and the Early Childhood Director certificate are designed to meet the educational requirements established by the Colorado Department of Human Services, Division of Child Care. Students who wish to work in licensed early childhood care and education programs may complete the certificate sequence of courses for Early Childhood Teacher levels and move forward to earn an Associate of Arts degree. In order to work in a licensed child care facility, the Colorado Department of Human Services does require experience working with young children in licensed early childhood programs in addition to the required coursework.

The Early Childhood Education program works closely with Colorado four year institutions of higher education and has articulation agreements for early childhood education teacher preparation. All Early Childhood and general education coursework must be completed with a grade of "C" or better.

Admission Requirements

• Admission to Arapahoe Community College
• Prospective new students for the Early Childhood Director certificate are required to meet with an ECE faculty member to plan their program of study.
• ACCUPLACER score of 95 in sentence skills and 80 in reading comprehension are highly recommended (or equivalent ACT / SAT scores or appropriate prior college coursework). Students who have completed an Associate degree or higher can provide an official transcript to show completion of a college level English Composition course. For prospective students who may not meet this requirement, they can begin the program, taking a developmental course in English reading and/or composition along with ECE 101: Introduction to Early Childhood Education. Meeting with an ECE faculty member or advisor is critical.
• Completion of a background check, or documentation from the student’s workplace a background check has been completed, is required for all students entering the program.
• Those that wish to have Early Child hood Education coursework transferred in should meet with an ECE faculty member.

Graduation Requirements

• All Early Childhood and general education coursework must be completed with a grade of "C" or better.
• To graduate, students must apply for graduation and complete the graduation survey (available via myACC). (form available at www.arapahoe.edu/graduation)
• After applying for graduation, all correspondence to a student about the status of their program conferral will be sent to their student email address only.
• As a graduate of a Career and Technical Education program you will be contacted by an ACC employee in approximately six months to verify your employment information. This information gathering is a federal requirement to ensure that ACC receives certain federal funding.
