Sewing for Beginners or as a Refresher

Is your sewing machine gathering dust because you don’t remember how to use it or you never really learned how? Learn the basics, using a pattern, selecting appropriate material, and constructing an easy project. Bring your machine, enthusiasm and the required equipment. A materials list will be mailed to you or distributed at class.

Intermediate Sewing

If you know the basics of sewing and feel ready for a bigger challenge, please join this class! Choose a more complicated pattern with sleeves or a collar and learn more in the sewing process so that you can feel comfortable sewing anything on your own!

After taking the beginning sewing class, continue to have fun and be comfortable sewing. Make a skirt in class. You will choose from three patterns and learn how to sew darts, insert zippers, and how to hem. If you were unable to take the beginners class, but have some experience sewing on your machine, feel free to sign up.

Animate Your Chair!

A chair can be more than a place to sit. It can become a piece of sculpture that is as unique as you are. Express yourself using fabrics, old clothing, and acrylic paint and transform a wood chair into a work of art. Bring a wood chair and scraps of fabrics, recycled jewelry and clothing to class. A more detailed material list will be given the first class session.
Johanna Goodman is a nationally known mixed media artist and has created over 1,000 chairs: many have been commissioned and are in private collections such as the Smithsonian Museum.

Hooked on Crocheting!

“ Hook on” as a beginner or “wanna-be” expert. Gain tips, knowledge and crochet creativity while you relax and meet new crochet friends. Practice yarns and crochet hooks are provided for first-timers or bring your own special project. Left-handers are welcome.
Shelly Stephens has taught men and women to initiate and perfect this traditional craft.

EMBROIDERY
Brazilian Embroidery: Fuschias and Butterfly
— Christine Hause
Create beautiful three-dimensional Brazilian Embroidery. Use a variety of rayon threads to add stunning color to the small piece (8”round). The stitches are easy and fun to learn and include stem, couching, French knots, bullions, cast-ons, knotted lazy daisy and pistil stitches! These realistic flowers and foliage look like they are growing on your fabric and have attracted the butterfly. Kit will provide everything you need to get started, including beads and specialty threads. Bring small 6” embroidery hoop and scissors. Christine Hause is an award winning and certified Brazilian Embroidery instructor.

KNITTING
Knitting for Beginners: Make a Scarf or Hat

Learn the basic components of knitting - cast on, knit, purl, cast off, increases and decreases. Discuss knitting abbreviations and conventions, how to read a pattern, and how to read a yarn label. Begin your project while working with an expert to help you.
You may purchase materials the first night of class or bring 200 yards of worsted weight yarn and size 8 knitting needles.

Writing and Illustrating Children’s Books

Come explore the adventure of writing and illustrating children’s books, from finding the right publisher to writing a good proposal to making your story sing. Find out how to work with artists if you are a writer, and how to work with writers if you are an artist. Receive a wide range of handouts, and enjoy a few surprise guest speakers! Discover how to link up with the publishing industry from these two experts.
Michael and Caroline Carroll have collectively written and illustrated nearly twenty children’s books for publishers such as Tyndale, Zondervan, Charlesbridge and others. Caroline is a children’s librarian at Columbine Public Library, with a background in Occupational Therapy and women’s ministries through various churches. Mike has illustrated magazines including National Geographic, Smithsonian, Popular Science, and Odyssey, and has written for Clubhouse, Astronomy and others.
