LAT 111 - Latin Language I – 5 credits

  • Prerequisite: None
  • Required Materials: Oxford Latin Course (2nd edition) – Part 1.
  • Course Objectives: to give students the opportunity to acquire the basics of Latin grammar, develop a repertoire of essential Latin vocabulary, develop an understanding of the contribution of Latin to the English language and understanding of Latin history and its contribution to western culture and civilization.
  • Student Competencies: Upon completion of this course, the student l should be able to:
    1. Comprehensibly reproduce the pronunciation of classical or ecclesiastical Latin
    2. Understand and respond to simple Latin directions and questions.
    3. Demonstrate understanding of basic Latin vocabulary.
    4. Demonstrate the ability to write simple Latin sentences using correct and idiomatic syntax.
    5. Develop and appreciation for the myriad ways that Latin is useful in the modern world.
