School Year Wrap UpAs the mountain bear hibernates in the winter, so Writers Studio snores in the summer. . . well, not quite. We are already working on our fall and spring event line up for the 2008/2009 school year. Writers Studio will be co-hosting a poetry festival with the Columbine Poets on September 20th. We will be celebrating the book publications of ACC faculty Jeff Broome and Lance Rubin. We are working with Art from Ashes, Many Mountains Moving, and Colorado Poets Association to create some combined literary events for next year. We will have open mics, showcases, literary contests, workshops, and festivals once again. And we will start our next goal of creating a Writers Studio Literary Club for those students who want to continue working with their peers in a writing group. Oh, and, too, the slightly important detail of growing our new AA degree with an Emphasis in Creative Writing. Many many thanks to all those who participated this year in our eleven Writers Studio events as our guest writers and our beloved audience. We ended the year with a flourish--our 2nd annual Literary Festival. The morning started with a bang--the winners of our literary contest all delivered beautiful, professional readings (their winning entries will be posted on the writers studio website shortly)--and the day continued popping with workshops and readings by our distinguished visiting writers: Shari Caudron, William Haywood Henderson, Aaron Anstett, and Laura Resau. Our participants had comments like these to make: Quality of workshops better every year! Even better than last year! Great! Please do these workshops more often! I had a blast! Good value for the money! Thank you for a wonderful day. Great Experience. And my favorite: Yay! I do have this one comment to make about our literary contest winners. Many of my students ask me, "When do you know when a piece is finished?" Well, here's one answer: Kate Krautkramer, winner of our fiction prize, emailed me a couple of days ago with this request: Are the pieces going up on the website now? I saw a word repetition I would like to change. On page 9 about three lines up from the bottom, I think your version says he would "mess" with her hair. If you can change that "mess" to "fuss" that would be great. Many thanks. Kate Obsessing over basically a two letter change in a how many page story . . .? Hate to tell you, students, but it's never over!! Until Next Fall! Yours Sincerely, Kathy Winograd |
