Over one billion people, approximately one-fifth of the world’s population speak some form of Chinese as their native language. The standardized form of spoken Chinese is Standard Mandarin. Standard Mandarin is an official language of the United Nations.

CHI 101 – Conversational Chinese I

Sample Syllabus

PREREQUISITE: None. This is a beginner class.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is the first course in a sequence for beginning students who wish to understand and communicate in Chinese. The material will include basic vocabulary, grammar, and expressions that are used in daily situations and travel. The emphasis of this course will be on developing oral and aural skills, self-expression as well as cultural insights.

COURSE OUTLINE:
During the semester the class will complete all chapters of Success with Chinese Level I.
Assignments will include:

  • tests and quizzes 20%
  • homework 5%
  • cultural presentation 35%
  • final exam (oral.) 5%
  • class performance and participation 35%

STUDENT COMPETENCIES: Upon completion of this course, the student at the novice level of Conversational Chinese should be able to:

  1. Comprehensibly reproduce the pronunciation and intonation of the language.
  2. Understand basic oral statements, instructions, and questions.
  3. Accurately apply vocabulary and learned phrases in simple oral expressions.
  4. Demonstrate knowledge of vocabulary and grammar in elementary interchanges.
  5. Employ comprehensible grammar in writing simple statements.
  6. Read and comprehend basic information.
  7. Demonstrate an awareness of appropriate cultural behaviors in everyday situations.



CHI 102 – Conversational Chinese II

PREREQUISITE: CHI 101 - Conversational Chinese I or instructor permission.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is the second course in a sequence for beginning students who wish to understand and communicate in Chinese. The material will continue to cover basic conversational patterns, expressions, and grammar. This course will continue to develop oral and aural skills, self-expression, as well as cultural insights.

CHI 111 – CHINESE I

PREREQUISITE: None. This is a beginner class.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is an introduction to Mandarin Chinese. Teaching and learning will focus on the development of functional language proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students are also expected to acquire Chinese cultural competency. Emphasis is on appropriate situational usage and demonstration of proficiency in task-activities for everyday structures. Writing of the Chinese characters is gradually introduced for recognition in each lesson, in context through Pinyi, vocabulary and appropriate usage.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  1. To provide the student with the opportunity to acquire basic knowledge of Chinese grammar and syntax.
  2. To provide practice in basic aural, oral, reading and writing skills.
  3. To provide practice in simple translations (English/Chinese – Chinese/English).
  4. To provide the opportunity to learn about the culture of China and its relationship to the American culture and to the world.

COURSE OUTLINE:
The course will cover 8 chapters of Integrated Chinese, Level I, Part I. Each chapter includes grammatical structures, vocabulary related to the theme developed in the chapter, communicative strategies to enhance conversational skills, cultural information and literary excerpts. Assignments will include

    • Chapter Tests 20%
    • Cumulative Final Exam 15%
  • Workbook/homework 5%
  • Cultural Presentations 20%

STUDENTS COMPETENCIES: Upon completion of this course (novice level) the student should be able to:

  1. Reproduce comprehensibly the pronunciation and intonation of Chinese
  2. Understand basic oral statements, instructions and questions.
  3. Apply accurately vocabulary and learned phrases in simple oral expressions.
  4. Demonstrate knowledge of vocabulary and grammar in basic conversations.
  5. Employ comprehensible grammar in writing simple sentences and paragraphs.
  6. Read and comprehend basic information, short articles and simple written selections.
  7. Identify geographical locations where Chinese is spoken and the various aspects of Chinese culture.



CHI 112 - Chinese II

PREREQUISITE: Chinese I – CHI 111 or instructor permission.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: After successful completion of Chinese I, students will continue to learn both Pinyin and Chinese characters. Some of the more complicated grammatical points are learned at this level, making language use a little more sophisticated. Vocabulary learning continues to be an important component of language learning. Practice of all grammatical structures and vocabulary continues through listening, speaking, reading and writing --- the four essential language learning skills. Students will be assessed on these language skills at the end of the year. This course will continue to prepare students to listen, speak, read and write in Chinese as well as learning Chinese/Asian cultural information.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this course are:

  1. To provide the student with the opportunity to acquire additional basic knowledge of Chinese grammar, vocabulary and syntax.
  2. To provide the student with continued practice in basic aural, oral, reading and writing skills.
  3. To provide the student with continued practice in translations (English/Chinese – Chinese/English).
  4. To provide the student with continued opportunity to learn about the culture of China and its relationships to the world.

COURSE OUTLINE:
The course will cover the remaining 3 chapters in Level I, Part I, and the first 4 chapters in Level 1, Part II. Assignemnts will include:

  • Class Performance and Participation: 30%
  • Tests and Quizzes:
    • Quizzes 10%
    • Chapter Tests 20%
    • Cumulative Final Exam 15%
  • Workbook/homework 5%
  • Cultural Presentations 20%

STUDENT COMPETENCIES: The student at novice-high level should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate improved pronunciation and intonation of Chinese.
  2. Comprehend and respond to oral directions and questions.
  3. Verbalize simple personal ideas using correct pronunciation and grammar.
  4. Comprehend simple, brief, written selections including articles and literary excerpts.
  5. Write simple, guided compositions, based on everyday situations, using correct grammar.
  6. Demonstrate an awareness of appropriate cultural behaviors in everyday situations.
  7. Demonstrate knowledge of some contributions of the Chinese culture to the culture of the United States.
