Spanish originated in northern Spain, and developed into a major language of government and trade. Today, over 400 million people speak Spanish as a native language making it the world's second most-spoken language. Spanish is an official language of 20 countries.

SPA 101 - CONVERSATION I

PREREQUISITE: None. This is a beginner class.

REQUIRED TEXTS :
Basic Spanish for Getting Along, and Basic Spanish by Jarvis Lebredo, (Houghton Mifflin Publ.), with audio-CDs

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This is the first course in a sequence for beginning students who wish to understand and communicate in Spanish. The material will include basic vocabulary, grammar, and expressions that are used in daily situations and travel.
Both texts will be used in conjunction, Basic Spanish providing the grammatical information necessary to complete activities in Basic Spanish for Getting Along
As expected from a Conversational Course the emphasis will be on oral communication.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this course are to provide the students with the opportunity:

  • To identify, distinguish and reproduce the sounds of Spanish
  • To understand basic statements and answer simple questions in Spanish
  • To express simple ideas, needs and request in a basic conversation
  • To acquire a basic knowledge of Spanish grammar and syntax
  • To learn more about the culture of the Spanish speaking world

COURSE OUTLINE:
During the semester the class will complete 7 chapters (lección Preliminar I & II, and lección 1 through 5)

  • Assignments will include:
    - Quizzes: aural and written quiz upon completion of each chapter
    - Oral presentations (individual or skits) during the course of each chapter.
    - Final Exam
    - Community / cultural project

STUDENT PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this class the student at the novice level should be able to:

  1. Comprehensibly reproduce the pronunciation and intonation of the language.
  2. Understand basic oral statements, instructions, and questions.
  3. Accurately apply vocabulary and learned phrases in simple oral expressions.
  4. Demonstrate knowledge of vocabulary and grammar in elementary interchanges.
  5. Employ comprehensible grammar in writing simple statements.
  6. Read and comprehend basic information
  7. Demonstrate an awareness of appropriate cultural behaviors in everyday situations.

SPA 102 – Conversational Spanish II

Pre-requisite: Spanish 101 or instructor permission

Texts: Basic Spanish and Spanish for Getting Along, by Jarvis Lebredo , Houghton Mifflin Publ., with audio-CDs

Course Description: This is the second course in a sequence for beginning students who wish to understand and communicate in Spanish. The material will continue to cover basic conversational patterns, expressions and grammar used in daily situations and travel.

Course Objectives: The objectives of this course are to provide the students with the opportunity

  • To identify, distinguish and reproduce the sounds of Spanish
  • To understand basic statements and answer simple questions in Spanish
  • To express simple ideas, needs and request in a basic conversation
  • To acquire a basic knowledge of Spanish grammar and syntax
  • To learn more about the culture of the Spanish speaking world

Course Outline:
During the semester the class will complete 6 chapters – Lección 6 to Lección 10 in both texts.
Assignments will include:

  • Quizzes: quiz upon completion of each chapter (aural and written)
  • Oral presentations:(individual or skits) during the course of each chapter
  • Final Exam
  • Cultural/ Community project

Student Performance Objectives: Upon completion of this course the students at the novice-high level should be able to:

SPA I - Spanish 111

PREREQUISITE: None. This is a beginner course

TEXT: Avenidas, (Marinelli / Oramas) Heinle & Heinle. Textbook , Quia (online workbook / lab manual)

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Spanish I begins a sequence course dealing with the development of functional proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing Spanish.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  • To provide the student with the opportunity to acquire basic knowledge of Spanish grammar, vocabulary and syntax.
  • To provide the student with practice in basic aural, oral, reading and writing skills.
  • To provide the student with practice in translations from English to Spanish & Spanish to English
  • To provide the student with the opportunity to learn about the culture of Spanish speaking countries

STUDENT COMPETENCIES
The student at the novice level should be able to:

  1. Reproduce comprehensibly the pronunciation and intonation of Spanish
  2. Understand basic oral statements, instructions, and questions
  3. Apply vocabulary and learned phrases in simple oral expressions.
  4. Use vocabulary and grammar in basic elementary interchanges
  5. Employ comprehensible grammar and syntax in writing simple sentences.
  6. Read and comprehend basic information
  7. Identify geographical locations where Spanish is spoken.
  8. Demonstrate an awareness of appropriate cultural behaviors in everyday situations.

COURSE OUTLINE During the semester this class will complete 5 chapters (Capítulo 1 to Capítulo 5) in the textbook. Students must complete the same chapters in the Quia online workbook/lab manual. There will be 5 chapter tests and a mid-term and a comprehensive final exam (written / oral). In addition assignments will include short quizzes, oral presentations (dialogs) on given topics and a cultural presentation (mostly in English).


SPA 211 - SPANISH III

PREREQUISITES:
SPA 112 or instructor’s permission

TEXTS: Facetas. Vista Higher Learning. Facetas workbook that accompanies the textbook.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course reviews grammar concepts already studied at the 111 and 112 level, as well as the introduction of new grammar points. The course will concentrate on oral communication (to create language, participate in challenging conversations, and to successfully communicate in basic survival situations), linguistics skills (to use accurate grammatical structures acquired in SPA 111 and SPA 112, to narrate events using proper verb tense, and to express feelings, opinions, hypotheses using subjunctive and conditional constructions), and familiarity of literature. At this level, Spanish will be spoken at all times in the classroom, unless it is absolutely necessary to translate into English. The course presents practical and relevant vocabulary useful in discussing daily life, vacations, health, cuisine, and jobs.

COURSE OBJECTIVE: Students at this level are beginning to create with language in order to communicate their needs, desires, and emotions in survival situations and contribute to challenging conversations. The course is designed to bring students to this level of proficiency by emphasizing the use of elements needed for daily conversations, listening, and practice.
This course is intended to provide the student with an opportunity:

  • To acquire more advanced knowledge of Spanish grammar and syntax
  • To have additional practice in more complicated aural, oral, reading and writing skills
  • To acquire additional practice in more sophisticated translations
  • To learn more about Spanish speaking countries and their relationship to the world

COURSE COMPETENCIES: Upon completion of this intermediate level course the student should be able to:

  1. Understand and respond appropriately in simple conversation
  2. Initiate, comprehend and maintain simple conversation
  3. Read, comprehend, and discuss expanded written selections, including literary selections in simple language
  4. Create guided, written compositions.
  5. Explain cultural contributions associated with the target language

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
Quizzes: This course will cover lecciones 1-6. There will be three quizzes. No make ups are permitted.
Presentations: each student will present 2 oral presentations.
Compositions: each student will write 5 compositions.

Attendance: Students enrolled for credit or audit are expected to attend all class sessions except in the case of illness or emergency. More than 3 unexcused absences will result in lowering the final grade one full grade. Students who miss too many sessions may be advised to withdraw from a course.

Workbook and Laboratory Manual: Assignments are due on quiz days. Late work will not be accepted unless excused by the instructor.

Participation: active class participation is expected.



SPA 212 – Spanish IV

PREREQUISITES: Spanish 211 or instructor permission

TEXTS: Album 3rd Ed., D.C Heath and Company

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course reviews Spanish I, II, and III with an increasing effort to develop functional proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing the language. This course introduces authentic literary works that capture the Hispanic culture as well as illustrate advanced grammar and syntax through reading. This course is an intermediate to advanced level.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this course are to provide the students with the opportunity:

  • To continue to acquire more advanced knowledge of Spanish grammar and syntax.
  • To practice more sophisticated translations from English to Spanish and Spanish to English.
  • To learn more about Spanish speaking countries and their relationships and interactions to the rest of the world.
  • To practice more aural, oral, reading, and writing skills.

COURSE COMPETENCIES: Upon completion of this course the student should be able to:

  1. Participate in class and small group discussions with increased precision in pronunciation, idiomatic expressions, and grammar.
  2. Describe events through narration.
  3. Read and comprehend literary selections at the intermediate-advanced level.
  4. Express thoughts through guided and free written self-expression.
  5. Have an increased awareness of cultural and geographical differences within the target cultures and the American culture.
  6. Appreciate the cultural differences between the target cultures and American culture.


SPA 114 - Fast-Track Spanish I & II

PREREQUISITE: Recommended for language enthusiasts or for those who have had two years of the target language either in high school, from previous study, through exposure in the home, or equivalent placement scores.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed to bridge beginning SPA 111 and SPA 112 courses with intermediate SPA courses. It is designed for students who have studied two years of the target language in high school and possess linguistic and cultural knowledge that true beginners do not, but are not ready to move to the intermediate level because they need an in-depth review of essential structures.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
The goals established for the novice-mid level student are:

  1. Reproduce, in a comprehensive manner, the pronunciation and intonation of the foreign language.
  2. Understand simple oral statements, instructions, and questions on authentic real-life situations.
  3. Articulate and apply learned vocabulary, phrases, and grammatical structures to express personal ideas on everyday topics in oral exchanges.
  4. Accurately use vocabulary and grammatical structures in simple descriptions and narratives.
  5. Read and comprehend simple literary selections on everyday topics.
  6. Demonstrate an awareness of appropriate cultural behaviors and values in everyday situations.
  7. Identify cultural artifacts in the target world.
  8. Consistently present insightful evidence of an awareness of the geographical area of the target world.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Attendance and Participation: Learning a language requires consistent attendance. More than 5 unexcused absences will result in the lowering of the final grade one full grade. Active participation in class is highly encouraged. Regardless of the reason for an absence, students are responsible for all assignments.
