ACC Hosts Screening of Cuban Musician’s Return to Native Cuba after Four Decades

(October 11, 2010 – Littleton, Colorado) – The Arapahoe Community College (ACC) Spanish Club is pleased to host Cuban musician Victor Alvarez for the screening of “One Among Thousands,” a documentary produced by film director Carlos Mair of Road House Vintage Productions. The documentary follows Alvarez’s return to Cuba for the first time in four decades. The film will show at 2 p.m. this Sunday, Oct. 17 in ACC’s Waring Theater.

“One Among Thousands,” documents Alvarez’s return to Havana, Cuba as he searches for long-lost relatives, childhood friends and explores revolutionary Cuba. Alvarez was just 13 in 1966 when his mother, like thousands of other Cuban parents, sent him to the United States so he wouldn’t grow up under a communist regime.

Alvarez, who now lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico, leads the ensemble Savor Cuban Street Music. Savor combines mandolin, acoustic bass and percussion to play music that is popular on the streets of Cuba.

“One Among Thousands” is open to the public. Following the 77-minute film, audience members will have an opportunity to ask Alvarez questions about his experience visiting Cuba.

Doors open at 1 p.m. The cost is $2. All proceeds will benefit the ACC Spanish Club. ACC’s Waring Theater is located in the Main Campus building. ACC’s Main Campus is located at 5900 S. Santa Fe Drive, just south of historic downtown Littleton.
