ACC Student Places in State Computer Security Contest

(May 12, 2010 - Littleton, Colorado) - Students from Arapahoe Community College competed in a statewide computer security contest in April, and one ACC student participated in a group that placed second. The US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs hosted the Computer and Network Vulnerability Assessment Simulation, referred to as CANVAS 2010, on April 2.

About 60 students from Colorado colleges and the Air Force Academy were arbitrarily divided ACC participants in CANVAS 2010into groups for the event. The groups were all given the same social networking scenario and asked to look at it with security in mind and to find a weakness in the site’s security. Their results were professionally hand written and submitted. Prizes were awarded to three of the 21 groups. ACC student Greg Mueller was in the group that received the second-place prize.

In 2006, Colorado State University and the Air Force Academy agreed to hold a joint security event in which students from both schools could participate. Based on its success, the event was expanded in 2007 to include students from five different local universities. Since 2007, CANVAS has continued to grow in student numbers and participation. The objective is to include and challenge everyone who is interested.

ACC students who participated in the event were Gary Marshall, Chris Gazaway, Greg Mueller, Dave Miller, Diane Truax and Kenneth Pate. Johan Hybinette, certified ACC Adjunct Instructor, facilitated the training for the competition. An instructor for the ACC Computer Networking Firewalls class and the Computer Networking Countermeasures and Defense class, he worked with the students one night a week for about six weeks to prepare them for the competition.

The ACC Main Campus at 5900 S. Santa Fe Drive is located on the east side of Santa Fe at College Drive just south of historic downtown Littleton.
