ACC Hosts 2010 Pulitzer Prize Poetry Finalist Workshop, Public Reading

(August 30, 2011 – Littleton, Colorado) - Angie Estes, 2010 Pulitzer Prize poetry finalist and author of four award-winning books, will present a Master Workshop and free public reading at Arapahoe Community College on September 15.

Hosted by the ACC Writers Studio and Student Affairs, the Master Workshop will be held from 5-7 p.m., in Room 3670 at Arapahoe Community College's Littleton Campus. Ten spots are available for the workshop at $50 per person. Participants will submit two poems prior to the workshop. Light dinner is included. A percentage of the workshop fee will go to the Writers Studio Scholarship fund.

The free public reading will be held 7:30-8:30 p.m. in the ACC Half Moon.

Angie Estes, 2010 Pulitzer Prize poetry finalistEstes is the recipient of numerous awards and her poems have appeared in America's most prestigious poetry collections. Tryst, her most recent book published in 2009, was selected as one of two finalists for the 2010 Pulitzer Prize. Prior books included Chez Nous (2005), Voice Over (2002) and The Uses of Passion(1995), earning Estes the 2001 FIELD Poetry Prize, Alice Fay Di Castagnola Prize and Peregrine Smith Poetry Prize. Other recognitions include a 2010 Guggenheim Fellowship, a Pushcart Prize and the Cecil Hemley Memorial Award from the Poetry Society of America as well as multiple fellowships, grants and residencies.

The Pulitzer Prize selection committee says of Estes' book: "[Tryst is] a collection of poems remarkable for its variety of subjects, array of genres and nimble use of language." Stephen Burt, in The New York Times Book Review, writes that Tryst is "indelibly American": "Gleeful and gorgeous, Estes's fast-paced free verse, rich with internal rhyme, takes rightful pride in the beauties it flaunts and explains."

For several years, Estes was Professor of American Literature and Creative Writing at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. Most recently, she has taught creative writing at Oberlin College, at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and at Ohio State University and is on the faculty of Ashland University's low-residency MFA program.
