ACC Courses Can Be Used Toward Teacher License Renewal

(June 3, 2009 - Littleton, CO) – Two courses that can help teachers meet requirements for license renewal will be offered at Arapahoe Community College in the 2009 summer and fall semesters. ACC will offer a course in classroom assessment for elementary and secondary teachers, EDU 262, Assessment of Student Academic Achievement, and a course in using technology, EDU 261, Teaching Learning and Technology.

Both courses will be offered online by Kay Uchiyama, Ph.D., and classes begin May 26. The 3-credit-hour courses have been designed specifically for K-12 classroom teachers. EDU 262 will address the principles of good classroom assessment. The course content focuses on developing and using a variety of assessment methods, both formative and summative, and using data to increase student learning. It is aligned with the Colorado Department of Education’s Performance Standards for Teachers, Standard Three, entitled Standards and Assessment.

“All of the content for this course is based on current research, literature and best practices,” Uchiyama said. “It is designed to introduce teachers to new developments in the field as well as deepen and extend a teacher’s knowledge of assessment. But, the course is not about numbers, so don’t let a fear of numbers keep you from enrolling in this course.”

EDU 261, Teaching, Learning and Technology prepares classroom teachers to incorporate technology into their curriculum. It addresses the most commonly used software programs, Internet resources, multimedia, graphics, strategies and activities with an emphasis on increasing learning through their use.

Both courses can be used toward renewal of the professional teachers’ license, Uchiyama said. “These classes use real-life situations that you will find applicable to your actual classroom practice. All assignments also are related directly to teaching. Online courses enable you to fit study time conveniently around your vacation and other summer activities and you never have to come to campus.”

Uchiyama earned her doctor of philosophy in curriculum and instruction with an emphasis in assessment from the University of Colorado at Boulder and a master of education degree from the University of Tampa. She holds bachelors’ degrees in elementary education and German. Her background and experience include K-12 classroom teaching, a principalship, district office experience, college level teaching and private consulting.

The classes began today, May 26, but those interested can still register and attend future classes. To find out more, contact Uchiyama at 303.797.5924 or kay.uchiyama@arapahoe.edu. To register or to learn more about ACC’s programs, visit www.arapahaoe.edu or call 303.797.4222.
