In today's tech-driven world, computers are essential tools across numerous career fields. If you're passionate about using cutting-edge technology to design architecture or interiors, consider pursuing one of our CAD-related certifications in Architecture or Interior Design. These certifications require only 16-17 credit hours, enhancing your resume and giving you a competitive edge in the job market. Many of the courses for these certificates overlap with those needed for the Associate of Applied Science degree in Architectural Studies or Interior Design, making it easier to achieve both credentials simultaneously.

Important Information for CAD Courses

Computer, Software, and Hardware Recommendations for CAD Courses

  • CAD Software Offered at ACC:
    • AutoCAD (Autodesk)
    • Revit (Autodesk)
    • SketchUp (Trimble)
    • SolidWorks (Dassault Systèmes)
  • Important: Always check software requirements before downloading any new programs to your computer!
  • Essential Hardware:
    • A mouse with a scroll wheel and left/right buttons is required. A 3D mouse is also a great option.
    • You’ll need a webcam and microphone for online meetings or video presentations.
    • A NVIDIA graphics card is necessary for CAD software. If you have an Intel graphics card, consider upgrading to NVIDIA.
    • While 8 GB of RAM is sufficient for basic schoolwork, ensure you have ample storage and memory to handle 3D software and larger files efficiently.

MacOS vs. Windows

  • Windows: Using a Windows computer is typically easier since most CAD instruction is Windows-based. However, macOS users can still manage effectively.
  • MacOS Limitations:
    • MacOS doesn’t natively support Revit or SolidWorks.
    • Installing Windows on a Mac through Parallels or Boot Camp can allow access to these programs.
    • If you’re not familiar with installing or running these systems, seek professional assistance when installing Windows on a Mac.

Purchasing a Computer

This information is for those looking to purchase a new laptop or desktop. Do not feel pressured to buy a new computer for school!

  • If you plan to use the technology while working in industry, aim for at least 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage.
  • 8 GB of RAM is acceptable for basic use, but make sure you have sufficient storage to run 3D models and large files.
  • Additional Notes:
    • 3D software like Revit, SketchUp, and SolidWorks require extra memory and storage, so purchasing a minimum of 16 GB of RAM, if possible, is best.
    • Gaming computers often have the necessary specs for CAD software but can be more expensive.
  • Recommended Brands: Many students and instructors suggest ASUS, Lenovo Yoga, MSi, or HP Spectre for reliable performance.
  • Tip: Always search for student discounts!
