Building Controls Technology Certificate Academic Plan

The Building Controls Technology program is focused on training students to maintain, install, and troubleshoot essential systems in modern buildings. The curriculum covers a wide range of topics including DC/AC electricity, industrial wiring, controls systems, construction materials and systems, and building environmental systems. Students will learn to install, repair, and maintain a building's computer-controlled mechanical and electrical systems, including its heating, ventilation, and air conditioining (HVA), lighting, energy management systems and related components. The program has been designed in partnership with the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) with the goal to train a skilled workforce to help fill the labor shortages in this high-demand career field.

Program Outcomes

  • Diagnose root problems to maintain the proper and safe operations of a facility
  • Program, configure, troubleshoot, and repair HVAC, lighting, energy management systems and related components
  • Use quality and safety standards necessary for the operation, maintenance, and repair of building systems
  • Communicate effectively and appropriately with team members
