Juror Statement:
For the last 18 years, the Colorado Gallery of the Arts has hosted the Annual Juried Kaleidoscope Exhibition, showcasing the diverse art being made throughout our community. This is the first year we have used a virtual format. The COVID-19 pandemic instantly changed how we temporarily view art. The use of this new venue has proven that we are resilient and adaptable. I appreciate how many local artists submitted their artwork to our virtual show. We had over 100 submissions in a variety of media, subject matter, styles, and techniques.
As a juror, artist, professor and gallery director, I focused on three main areas of critique; formal elements, technical competency and individual expression. Each piece must stand alone on its merit.
First, I start with the formal elements. I evaluate the way the artist incorporates the elements of art, principles of design, composition, use and organization of color and original approaches. Additionally, I consider the technical competence and professional quality of how the medium was handled. Lastly, whether it is a painting, mixed media, ceramics, photography, or other forms of art, it must speak to the viewer. Individual expression has a way to evoke emotion, talk to us, pose a question, make us think and consider a new perspective. From traditional to conceptual art, each piece has its own purpose, expressions, message, style, technique and voice. For me, the question is, "has the artist effectively combined these attributes into a cohesive work of art that resonates with the viewer?" The works I selected for this show represent the diverse talent and skill of our local artists and their unique voices in creating art.
