AAS Nursing PN to RN Program Option
The AAS Nursing: PN to RN Option program is for students who possess a license as a Practical Nurse and wish to complete the ADN / AAS program. Successful completion of the AAS Nursing: PN to RN Option qualifies the graduate to apply to the Colorado Board of Nursing for licensure as a registered nurse in Colorado. Interested applicants must have a current Colorado LPN nursing license. Work experience is not required for applicants who have graduated their PN programs within the three years prior to application. If more than 3 years have elapsed since graduation, 1000 hours of LPN experience within the last 3 years must be documented.
- Must have completed the following pre-requisites:
- ENG 1021 English Comp I, or ENG 1022 English Comp II, or ENG 1031 Technical Writing, PSY 2440 Growth & Development, BIO 2101 Anatomy & Physiology I w/lab, BIO 2102 Anatomy & Physiology II w/lab, BIO 2104 Microbiology w/lab, BIO 2116 Pathophysiology, HPR 1010 Dietary Nutrition, or HPR 1050 Human Nutrition, MAT1120*** or higher GT-MAT, and a GT humanities or social/behavioral science (note that PSY 1001 General Psychology counts and is a pre-requisite to PSY 2440) with an overall GPA of 3.0 and no grade less than C.
- Applicants who have failed 2 nursing courses within the last 2 years or are otherwise ineligible to return to any ACC or CCCS nursing program are ineligible for admission.
- Work requirements:
- If it has been more than three years since your LPN graduation, you must provide evidence of a minimum of 1000 hours LPN work experience within the last 3 years.
- If it is less than 3 years since your LPN graduation, no additional work experience is required.
- If the number of qualified applicants exceeds the cohort capacity, admission will be determined by GPA.
- Once admitted, students must pass a background check, urine drug screen, submit verification of all clinical compliance requirements, and complete NUR 1089 Transition LPN-ADN
- After successfully completing NUR 1089, students will enter into the third semester of the ADN program and must successfully complete NUR 2006 Advanced Med/Surg I, NUR 2011 Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing, and NUR 2012 Pharmacology II
- After successfully completing NUR 1089, NUR 2006, NUR 2011, and NUR 2012, and applying for PLA based on your LPN license, the first year nursing courses (NUR1009, NUR1012, NUR1006, and NUR1050) will be conferred on your ACC transcript. Students must complete NUR 2016 Advanced Med/Surg II and NUR 2030 Transitions to Professional Nursing to be eligible to graduate, earn the AAS in nursing, and apply for the NCLEX RN
- After completing NUR 1089, NUR 2006, NUR 2011, and NUR 2012 successfully, students may opt to dually enroll in the RN to BSN program.
*The PN to RN Program Option application will reopen again March 18-29, 2024 for Summer and Fall 2024 cohorts.
Before Submitting Your Application
- Meet with the Admissions Health Programs Student Success Coach or an Academic Advisor

- Review the Nursing Student Handbook
- Attend a Nursing Department Information Session in person or online.
- Familiarize yourself with the Associate of Applied Science - Nursing degree requirements.
- Complete the SARA and COVID Acknowledgment (PN-RN) form
- Complete the Health Care Employment Verification as LPN form
- Review the list of Disqualifying Criminal Offenses that would prevent your admission to the Nursing Program. You will need to undergo a criminal background check as part of the admissions process.
Professional Licensing Disclosure
Important Note for Prospective Students:
If you are considering an academic program that leads to a professional license in the state where you plan on living and working after graduating, it is highly recommended that you first seek guidance from the appropriate licensing agency in that state BEFORE beginning the academic program at Arapahoe Community College (ACC). In compliance with the U.S. Department of Education and the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (NC-SARA), ACC provides information pertaining to professional licensure and certification in correlation with programs offered at ACC that may lead to state licensure.
The licensure requirements for nurses differ between all 50 states and U.S. territories. ACC recommends each student visit the National Council of State Board of Nursing website to identify the nursing requirements for the state in which they plan to live and practice. ACC can only guarantee that the requirements for the state of Colorado are met with our programs. State-by-state information is available on the Nursing License Map.

ACC has not determined if the Nursing Programs meets applicable certification or licensure requirements for the US Territories listed below. Students are encouraged to contact the nursing licensing office for the territory of interest.
